Interested in volunteering with us? Great! Here is what you need to know:

We offer English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED classes for adults.

We have classes in the mornings from 10:00 - 12:00 and offer 3 levels of ESL and GED class. (Our Beginning level ESL class runs 10:00 - 1:00 and is taught by a paid teacher, with volunteer classroom assistants.)

In the evenings, our classes are 6:30 - 8:30 and we offer 3 levels of ESL and GED class. All of our evening classes are taught by volunteers.

We require at least a three month commitment of one day a week for 3 hours. Usually our tutors will choose one day a week and will be placed with a group/class by our greatest need and their interest level. Volunteers usually arrive a half hour before class starts to plan and prepare for their lesson and then spend a half hour after class reporting.

All of our volunteers and tutors should go through the Minnesota Literacy Council's 12 hour tutor training. You can find the schedule for the upcoming trainings here: http://www.themlc.org/trainingregistration.html

Once you have completed the training (sometimes it is possible to start volunteering before you do the training) we will set up a time for you come in and observe the classes, visit with the other volunteers, tour the center and then meet with either the morning or evening coordinator. We will then chat about the right placement for you, the curriculum and other expections and questions you may have.

Before the inital orientation you can fill out the application and conduct agreement.

Please contact Sarah Krzewinski  nslc@themlc.org or 612-377-5399 for more information.
